F.A.Q.

How do I know if tutoring is right for me?

Everyone needs a little help every now and then, and that's why we're here. Seeking out tutoring can not only help you strengthen areas of your musicianship about which you feel insecure, it can help you continue to build facets of your tool set about which you already feel confident!

What subjects does Motivata tutor?

Our tutoring services focus on the following subjects, the majority of which are courses required in a typical undergraduate music degree:

  • Music Theory (Fundamentals through Music Theory IV)

  • Ear Training (Ear-Training I-IV)

  • Diction for Singers (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Latin)

Grad students: We can also help with entrance exams and orals preparation.

How often should I meet with a tutor?

Unfortunately, tutoring is not one-size-fits-all and the frequency with which you should meet with your tutor depends on numerous individual factors. What we do know is that consistency is key. You’ll have greater success in overcoming your struggles and getting the hang of concepts if you make tutoring a regular part of your schedule. For many students, meeting with a tutor once every week (or sometimes every two weeks) yields the best results.

Are tutoring sessions and coachings the same as taking music lessons?

Although our tutors are highly qualified and seasoned private lesson instructors, the time that you will spend with them in a tutoring appointment is not the same as taking private music lessons. The primary focus of your tutoring session will be to help you improve your skills in “classroom” subjects such as theory and ear training, which is not the focus of private lessons in voice or an instrument. If, at any point, you find yourself interested in taking private lessons with a Motivata tutor, you are more than welcome to ask them about their lesson rate and structure.

I am getting ready to take entrance exams. Can Motivata help me prepare for them?

We absolutely can! In addition to tutoring that focuses on part-writing, analysis, and dictation skills, we can assist with music history review, including score recognition and essay writing. Scheduling regular tutoring appointments in advance of your entrance exams is the best way to guarantee success, so make sure that you book with us ahead of the exam date. For more information about how we can help with entrance exam prep, email us at info@motivatamusic.com.

What about oral exams? Can you help with that?

Yes, indeed. If you’re wrapping up that master’s degree and want some help preparing for your oral exams, we’ve got you covered. Email us at info@motivatamusic.com for details.

What should I do if I need to reschedule my appointment?

We completely understand that life happens. If you find yourself needing to reschedule a tutoring appointment, we ask that you notify your tutor via email. You and your tutor will work together to reschedule your appointment on a mutually convenient day and time. To avoid being charged a $15 no-show fee, we ask that you contact us via email (info@motivatamusic.com) at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled tutoring or coaching session. In the event that you decide to cancel your appointment, notify us via email (info@motivatamusic.com). Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will be subject to a cancellation fee of $25.00

Do you offer face-to-face tutoring or coaching appointments?

We do not offer face-to-face tutoring. Our tutoring appointments are conducted via one of the following video conferencing platforms:  Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.
